Like all living things, trees have a life cycle. As trees age they begin to lose vigor and become less able to resist disease, insect infestation, and drought. If a woodlot is not selectively thinned the mature trees will begin to decline, rot, and lose value.

The key to properly managing a woodlot is to know when a number of trees have reached the point of optimum size, quality, and value - otherwise known as "economic maturity". When these mature trees are removed openings are created in the forest canopy. Sunlight now reaches the immature trees, triggering a dramatic increase in growth.
